About the Book

Failed screenwriter Darcy Mattews is already frustrated with life, but it gets worse when his girlfriend breaks up with him and he hangs up the phone on his cancer-stricken father.

Out of desperation, he agrees to visit the men's group his best friend, Pat, has been pestering him to join, even though it sounds suspiciously like a cult. What begins as reluctant participation becomes a confrontation with shame, avoidance, and the stories men tell themselves to survive.

As Darcy begins to face the heartbreaking cost of his choices alongside the other men in the group, Pat spirals back toward destructive habits that threaten everything he’s built, including his marriage. Soon Darcy is forced to test whether the fragile honesty he has learned can extend beyond himself to Pat and everyone else he has neglected.

Funny, raw, and unexpectedly tender, The Men’s Group is a story about men, friendship, and the courage it takes to show up when everything inside you wants to run.

The Men’s Group is a sharp, honest, and unexpectedly tender look at male friendship—the kind that’s messy, yet worth fighting for.”

Our Work

Together, Jacob and Nick have spent a combined twenty-five years supporting men at the most pivotal moments of their lives, through 1:1 coaching, men’s groups, and immersive retreats. Their work centers on helping men tell the truth about their lives, build relationships rooted in trust, and learn how to stay present when things get uncomfortable.

At the heart of that work is The Arena Men’s Group, a nationwide community of men who meet twice a month to talk honestly about life, marriage, fatherhood, ambition, shame, the quiet fears they rarely name elsewhere, and much more. The Arena is not about fixing men or teaching them how to perform better. It’s about creating a space where men can be fully seen, challenged, and supported by other men who are willing to do the same.

“A powerful, moving, and healing novel. A must-read.”

- Jim Curtis, Author & Self Development Coach

More Praise for The Men’s Group

  • “Jacob Fishbein and Nick Papadopoulos have been doing important work with men for decades. They know how to get men to talk when they’d rather keep their feelings bottled up. Now they've taken that life experience and written a highly engaging and readable novel, The Men’s Group. This book is so needed. For all those men who should go to a men’s group but are wary and afraid to be with other guys, this captivating novel will help reach them in the privacy of their homes—and hopefully get them ready to talk more openly about themselves.”New List Item

  • “I absolutely loved this book. With equal parts humor and gravitas, The Men’s Group is as much a romp through the hard, dirty streets of New York City as it is a window into the human essence of its male characters. Fishbein and Papadopoulos pull no punches, crafting storylines that look honestly and unflinchingly at our dark addictions, the masks we wear, the stories we tell, and, underneath it all, the vulnerable hearts we desperately want to protect and just as desperately want to share. The Men’s Group is, above all, a courageous, open-hearted invitation to explore the rich, complex inner world of the man in every mirror."

    — Ken Mossman, Men’s Coach and Founder of the Integrated Adult Man (IAM) Program

  • “In The Men’s Group, Fishbein and Papadopoulos tell the story of a radically different kind of men’s group, one where courage is found through vulnerability and men are invited to share their deepest fears, shame, and confusion in order to discover their authentic selves. It’s raw, intense, and unfiltered. If you can weather the storm, you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat. Rated ‘R’ for real.”

How it Started

In early 2016, over burgers near Penn Station, Nick asked Jacob if he would help him write a book about men’s groups. He had been trying for years with other writers, but nothing had clicked. Jacob felt a chill run up his spine and said yes immediately. Without knowing what it would mean for their next ten years, he insisted they write it as a novel. He joined Nick’s Dudes of Disruption Men’s Group as research shortly after, but it didn’t stay research for long. Jacob stayed in that group for eight years, and they started a second group, The Arena Men’s Group, in 2020. Since that cold February day in 2016, Jacob and Nick have met every week, writing drafts, talking deeply about men and friendship, hiring editors, and rewriting the book again and again, until it slowly transformed from something instructional into something character-driven and alive.

The roots of that lunch and all that followed stretched back years. When Nick’s father died in 1996, he buried his grief and focused on being strong for his family. Only later, in therapy with Armand DiMele, did he recognize how distant he felt from other men and decide to start a group as a way to heal. That first group in 2005 changed his life’s path. Jacob came to the work through his own search for meaning after college, hiring Nick as his coach and discovering both a calling and a friendship. The novel grew out of those lived experiences, not as a manual but as a story shaped by years of honest conversation and a shared belief that when people tell the truth in their relationships, something real can change.
